RESPONSIBLE INNOVATION for CIRCULAR ECONOMY (RICE)
Credits 3
Faculty Name Dr. Subhasis Ray
Program MBA
Academic Year and Term 2020-21 Term VI

Course Description

Innovations will drive and create business leaders of the future. While we may intuitively understand the power and potential of innovation, the process, motivation and market making for such innovations are still not so clear. This is seen from the number of terms circulating in the innovation literature- disruptive innovation, open innovation, social innovation, jugaad/frugal innovation among others. While innovations are welcome not all innovations may not be good for the society and environment. Examples could be violent mobile games like ‘Blue Whale’ or cheap/attractive paints made with toxic raw materials. History provides many examples of new technologies that have had serious negative consequences or that simply just failed to address significant societal or environmental challenges.

This course discusses some of the popular innovation typologies and then brings in the concept of responsible innovation, its meaning and its significance by addressing the societal implications of new technologies and showing how we might incorporate ethical considerations into technical innovations.

There is a special focus in the course on Circular and Sharing Economy related innovations like carpool, Airbnb, waste/water/plastic recycling.

In this course, we will:
· discuss the concept of responsible innovation, the individual and collective responsibility and the ethical issues regarding innovation
· investigate the challenges of linear economy
· introduce the concept of circular economy
· Discuss circular economy business models
