Course Description:

IT Governance is the organizational capacity exercised by the Board, executive management and IT management to control the formulation and implementation of IT strategy and in this way to ensure the fusion of business and IT – business IT alignment. However, it has been observed that many IT initiatives have failed to deliver the bottom-line results that the companies had hoped for. This calls for an urgent need to understand and appreciate the nitty-gritty of the underlying concepts that explain the root causes of these. Based on recent studies worldwide, it has been revealed that IT business value directly results from effective IT governance. Firms with superior IT governance have at least 20% higher profits than firms with poor governance.

Given the above, the objective of this course is to explore three popular frameworks w.r.t. the relevant practices regarding IT governance. First, we introduce the MIT Sloan framework for IT Governance widely known as the

Weill & Ross framework

. This defines IT Governance as “specifying decision rights and accountability framework” w.r.t. IT to support enterprise objectives. Next, we will discuss the

IT Infrastructure Library

(

ITILv3

), proposed by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC, UK). This is an industry recognized most credible framework, which provides systematic approach to high quality IT service delivery and documented

best practice for IT Service Management

. The ITIL standards are maintained and updated by the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) and

provides various levels of certification

. Last, we will explore another industry recognized framework

COBIT

which provides Governance of Enterprise IT (GEIT) through a holistic approach thro’ systematic governance and management. COBIT is maintained by Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA, USA) and

offers industry appreciated certifications

. As we go along, there will be a series of case discussions on the successful implementations of IT governance in selected companies.

On completion of the course participants will be able to:

Understand and appreciate the various IT Governance frameworks

Apply Weill & Ross framework to analyze and identify the Governance of business organizations and suggest improvements
